Dr. Bedran-Russo's research focuses on the mechanical and biochemical properties of teeth and the interface between biomaterials and tooth structure. Her research team also carries out experimental and clinical studies on the localized biological responses induced by preventive and reparative dental biomaterials. Dr. Bedran-Russo has published more than 65 scientific peer reviewed papers and over 100 abstracts. Her research is funded by the NIH.
Dr. Bedran-Russo was named a Rising Star in Clinical Sciences and received the 2014 UIC Researcher of the Year award. As the leader of the Multidisciplinary Oral Sciences Training Program (MOST) she is dedicated to train future clinician-scientists. Dr. Bedran-Russo is also the president of IADR Dental Materials group and has organized several national and international meetings including the 2016 Academy of Dental Materials meeting here in Chicago.

The tooth is a very complex structure that can be modified over time due to aging and disease process. It is important to understand the biochemical and mechanical properties of the tooth in order to develop reparative/regenerative biomaterials to replace lost tooth structure. Therefore, we conduct studies to investigate the mechanical and biochemical properties of specific sites in the tooth and also investigate the interface between biomaterials and the tooth structures. Using a biomimetic approach, we study the use of agents that can strengthen the tooth and consequently improve the properties of the tooth and tooth-restoration interface. In addition, Dr. Bedran-Russo’s group carry out experimental and clinical studies on the localized biological responses induced by preventive and reparative dental biomaterials.

The NIH funded Laboratory of Applied Dental Biomaterials and Interfaces at UIC College of Dentistry is leading innovations in biomaterials and dental implant research.“When fillings fail, decay forms around it and the seal is lost. Our research is leading to news ways of reinforcing the interface between resin bond and tooth dentin. We're exploring new solutions using natural compounds such as grape seed, to reduce the risk of decay.”
